The Pro Cantare Choir

The Pro Cantare Choir was founded in 2010 by a group of passionate singers, most of whom were members of the Pro Musica Opera Chorus before it was disbanded a number of years ago.  Its approximately 30 members come from all walks of life – chartered accountants, teachers, engineers, government officials, IT specialists, financial managers, field guides, sound specialists, drama coaches, crafters, journalists, sewing specialist, event organisers, entrepreneurs in various fields – and has more than six decades of collective singing experience.  Under leadership of Daniela Pretorius, the choir aims to bring audiences a wide range of music genres from contemporary to opera.  Pretorius, who is a Subject Advisor at the Department of Education, completed her degree in music from the University of Pretoria with organ as her main instrument.  Since completing a teacher’s diploma at the University of South Africa shortly thereafter, she has been conducting both children and adult choirs throughout Gauteng.  The Pro Cantare Choir’s goal is to continue the pioneering work of some of the great spirits in the South African Performing Arts Industry to ensure sustainability for, and accessibility to performing arts in the country.
